Cubic Boron Nitride (CBN) is transformed from hexagonal boron nitride (white graphite) under high temperature and high pressure. It is a advanced cutting tool material developed in the 1970s.
Main Advantages of CBN Cutting Tools
1. Extremely High Hardness & Wear Resistance
-
Reaches 3,500 – 4,500 HV
-
Second only to diamond
2. Excellent Thermal Stability
-
No oxidation at 1,300°C (2,370°F)
-
Chemically inert with most metals and ferrous materials
-
Enables high-speed cutting of hardened steels and heat-resistant alloys
-
Minimal adhesion and diffusion wear
3. Good Thermal Conductivity & Low Friction
4. Balanced Mechanical Properties
-
Bending strength and fracture toughness ceramics and carbide
-
Suitable for rough and semi-finish machining of chilled cast iron
Additional Features
-
High-speed machining capabilities: Can machine difficult-to-cut materials such as high-temperature alloys and thermal spray coatings at high speeds
-
Sintered CBN inserts: CBN can be sintered with carbide to form a composite. This sintered CBN body achieves a bending strength of up to 1.47 GPa and can be reground for multiple uses
Important Note
For general-purpose machining of common materials, high-speed steel (HSS) and carbide remain the primary choices. Superhard materials like CBN are only economical when machining very hard materials or performing ultra-precision finishing.
Selection Guide by CBN Content Percentage
| CBN Content | Typical Application |
|---|---|
| 50% CBN | Continuous cutting of hardened steel (45–65 HRC) |
| 65% CBN | Interrupted cutting of hardened steel |
| 80% CBN | Machining chilled cast iron; heavy-duty interrupted cutting of hardened steel |
| 90% CBN | High-speed cutting of cast iron (vₐ = 500–1,300 m/min); interrupted cutting of hardened steel, carbide, sintered metals, etc. |
